Communities Under Siege Project Staff

Project Director Carol McGruder writer, trainer, researcher, activist, workshop presenter, Communities Under Siege, Project Director Carol O. McGruder has over thirteen years of experience in tobacco control advocacy. Concurrent with her duties on the C.U.S.-Communities Under Siege Project, funded through the

California Tobacco Control Section she also directs the San Francisco African American Tobacco Free Project, and she is the Co-Principal Investigator on the PHAT-Protecting the Hood Against Tobacco cessation project an academic-community research project with the University of California, San Francisco.

Project Coordinator Julie M. Waters is one of the newest faces of tobacco control and research. Prior to joining Communities Under Siege, she worked in tobacco research with the California Black Health Network and San Diego State University. Concurrent to her duties at C.U.S., she is the outreach supervisor for a Tobacco Related Disease Research

Program funded project examining the impact of segregation on African-American smoking prevalence rates. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from San Diego State University.
